  Elixir for the joints
On Sam Dworkis's recommendation, I bought Syn-flex, a liquid Glucosamine formula that is supposed to heal joints and improve mobility. It also has chondroitin, omega 3 and 6, boswellin, yucca, vitamins A, E, and C, manganese, and bromelain. The liquid form allows for better nutritional absorption than pills.

Please note the following warning: "those who are allergic to shellfish may experience a reaction to Syn-flex. In most cases, allergies are caused by proteins in shellfish, not chitin, a carbohydrate from which glycogen is extracted so it should be safe for someone with an allergy to shellfish or iodine to take glycogen." See this page for details. I happen to have an allergy to shellfish, but San-flex has not affected me adversely.

I have had sore hip joints for a couple of months or so, and it really started getting bad about three weeks ago when I spent too much time seated in Easy Pose during my meditation course (combined with my lower-back sprain). Practically all my joints have lost flexibility with age so I've been looking for some kind of aid in recovery.

San-Flex promises improvement within 10-14 days. I've been taking it for about five days, and have noticed a marginal improvement in the aching in my hip joints. For some people it might take up to 20-25 days to see results. It does not taste that bad, either. I will keep you posted if there is any improvement.

 
Comments:
As an aside, those who are serious about their vegetarian principles - as most serious yoga students claim to be - wouldn't be using shellfish-based products either. However, when I mentioned this on a yoga message board a few years ago nobody seemed to care. Perhaps they're actually more serious about their knees than their principles.

On a less cynical note -I took various glucosamine/chondroitin preparations when I was having knee troubles but I'm not sure if they helped. What definitely did help was being taught how to go into lotus safely, by British teach Godfrey Devereux. Basically, fold the leg completely in two, heel to upper thigh, *before* you try to place the foot on the opposite thigh. Then move the folded leg as a unit - this allows you to work on the hip movement without straining the knee.

I don't check on this blog as much because writing is enough of a yoga for me at the moment, (see quotation number 3 on the right :)), still, I admire your efforts, to work on this stuff. The few moments I have done even a rough attempt at yoga poses have ALWAYS been for the better, even if I have done them slightly wrong. (Aside, I got your e-mail and have written a response, it's just been sitting in my draft folder. I'll finish it.)
