Honoring the beloved -- and shoulder shrugs
I did not go to Flow Yoga this week because Stephanie (daughter) and I had to celebrate Teresa's birthday. Matt (son) also came over for dinner on the town. It was great to have everyone together to catch up on all the happenings in our lives.

At lunch time this week, I have been doing my kriya and meditation, but also working in some routines to increase the flexibility in my shoulders and upper torso. Basically doing "office yoga" poses on a chair. It's a focus that I want to keep up because my stiff shoulders are holding back my practice. In just four days, I've already noticed a difference. My arms come much closer to my ears when I raise them above my head. However, I can't get be elbows together to do the top half of eagle pose (Garudasana).

Comments:
I don't know what I'd do without yoga stretches for the shoulders--my right arm and shoulder is my mouse arm, and by the end of the day at the office, it HURTS. Doing half of eagle pose makes it feel so much better.

Sara, my problem is that I cannot get into the top half of eagle pose. My elbows can barely touch. I think it's because of lack of flexibility, but it could also be to anatomy -- my shoulders are too wide for my arms.

I no longer use a computer mouse, switching to a trackball, precisely because of severe pain from too much work at the keyboard.

Hi Michael:

I ran across your blog while googleing John Schumacher at Unity Woods. It is great to read about your adventures in yoga. I have been ‘exploring’ yoga over the last seven months, going to the different studios in the DC area, learning about the different styles and approaches to yoga. Who would have thought there were so many styles and schools of yoga? I laughed when you described that the transition between classes in some of these studios seemed like a Chinese fire drill. You have to love the old converted townhouses turned yoga studios in DC. I like the urban feel of the DC yoga scene, coming down to study from the ‘burbs’, though I must admit the tight quarters get to me every once in awhile. I’m always afraid I’m going to smack somebody in the face while doing my upward ‘swan dive’ from uttanasana to tadasana when the mats are packed so tight. You might want to check out 18th & Yoga’s U street studio. It has a big studio space like Thrive’s but is more airy and light and it never seems crowded no matter how many students are there.

Anyway, keep up the practice and the blog.

Mark

Many people hear voices when no-one is there. Some of them are called mad and are shut up in rooms where they stare at the walls all day. Others are called writers and they do pretty much the same thing.
