  New feature-packed page
I have moved all the yoga studio-related links and content from the Resource Gateway to a new page, DC-Area Yoga Studios. The same restrictions apply -- I have taken classes at only a few studios and the links are meant as a service for those finding a nice place to practice. We'll see how the page develops.

  Caught myself smiling
The past few yoga classes, I have noticed that I have a Mona-Lisa style smile that I am able to maintain through most of the practice , though it does seem to shift to more of a grimace in those core twist that seem to test my edge. But I do seem to be riding on a wave of happiness when I'm on the mat. The other constant seems to be a plunge into the depths of my physical limits because I always feel like crashing after a class. This past weekend, after my Sunday and Saturday morning classes, it took me two or three hours to recover. I just felt completely bushed and sapped of energy. I have been working to improve my physical conditioning -- I walk up eight flights of stairs to my office two-four times a day, instead of using an elevator. I am just holding back the tide of aging -- after all, I am 56 years old. I can no longer just flip a switch and get in shape.

What intirgues me is that the conditions of smiliness (I can't bring myself to say happiness) and physical fatigue can coexist in the same body.

  A refresher course

I am taking a workshop at Spiral Flight Yoga in Georgetown on March 19. Amy Weintraub will be leading her Life Force Yoga To Beat The Blues. This is the first time that I've seen her offer a seminar or workshop in the DC area.

Amy wrote the book Yoga for Depression and really opened my eyes to the power of yogta. Her schedule is posted on her web site.

I have never been to Spiral Flight Yoga. It is just not conveniently located for me. It does have a strong schedule of classes, workshops and services, especially on alternative healing therapies, like acupuncture and reiki.

  Circle Yoga: joining the select

Circle Yoga - Adult Yoga - Washington, D.C. is run by Annie Mahon. The studio is located near Connecticut Ave. and the Maryland line so it's not conveniently located for me -- not near the Metro Red Line or in the Rockville area. I do plan on checking out a class at the studio because Annie was very flattering in an e-mail that set off this wink.

Circle Yoga is working with other yoga shops to organize a DC Yoga Week for April 29-May 5. Flow Yoga Center and SomaFit are the other shows supporting the initiative. They expect to add more DC yoga studios shortly.

The fight to control cultural heritage

India: Breathe in, and hands off our yoga Christian Science Monitor: "The project represents a 21st-century approach to safeguarding intellectual property of the ancient variety. The Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL) aims to prevent foreign entrepreneurs from claiming Indian lore as novel, and thus patenting it." This database extends to yoga, as well. Indians used to look down on their traditional arts, but have had to update their opinions when Westerners start to exploit them.

  Art of Living Silver Jubilee
Art of Living Jubillee logo

I had been meaning to mention that the Art of Living is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its founding on February 17-19. The Silver Jubilee is being held in India and it is going to be a big deal -- 2.5 million attending, according to AOL. People will be coming from all over the world to Bangalore to pay homage to Sri Shri Ravi Shankar. Obviously, I am not going -- just couldn't fit a trip around the world into my schedule. I am also not that hot on the guru thing.

I have not been practicing my kriya as regularly as I used to. As my frequency of yoga classes has gone up, the available time for pranayama has gone down. I still try to fit it in on the weekends as part of a restoration routine.

Many people hear voices when no-one is there. Some of them are called mad and are shut up in rooms where they stare at the walls all day. Others are called writers and they do pretty much the same thing.
